South Island – CHECK ✅

KM Mark Start:

1702

Start Location:

Furneaux Lodge

KM Mark Finish:

1689

Finish Location:

Meretoto/Ship Cove then Picton then Kaikoura.

Actual KM Today:

14

Weather:

Sunny – turned to rain in the arvo.

General:

Departed Furneaux Lodge at 5:30am as I needed to be at Ships Cove before 9:30am to get the water taxi back to Picton and the estimated time frame for that stretch is between 4-5.5hrs.

First thing I noticed when I started were the stags roaring in each of the gullies. They were incredibly loud most of the morning. Made it to Ship Cove in good time and managed to fit in a good look around the Cook Memorials and a swim in the ocean to celebrate the end of my South Island journey! Really happy to have made it this far. A massive thank you to everyone that has helped along the way to make it all possible. To those that I have met along the way, it was an absolute pleasure, thanks for making the trail such an amazing place to be.

Body/Health:

Outlook:

Happy to have the SI under my belt but also a little gutted the SI is finished. Looking forward to seeing what surprises the NI has in store for me

Finish Location:

Furneaux Lodge

Actual KM Today:

Weather:

Rained most of the day

General:

Woke up to really heavy rain, so took my time getting ready. Had eased a little before I set out. Pretty easy walking today, all on a 4WD track from Punga Cove (Camp Bay) to Furneaux Lodge near the Endeavour Inlet settlement. Again, some amazing locations that a few people are lucky enough to have holiday homes at & a few permanent residence scattered around too.

Body/Health:

Guuuud yaaaar, guuuud.

Outlook:

Can’t believe it’s the end (of the South Island) tomorrow.

KM Mark Finish:

Finish Location:

Punga Cove in Camp Bay

Actual KM Today:

Weather:

Overcast with the odd light shower

General:

Had a few beers more than I’d planned last night, courtesy of the cyclists. Felt a little dusty, slower and more fragile 😆 than a regular day but still really enjoyed the trail. Some beautiful coast line. Find myself wishing I had my dive gear with me, the water looks ideal. Punga Cove is a special place. I was told Harrison Ford was here a few days before I arrived…gutted I missed him!

Hot tub at Punga Cove was great for the muscles.

Body/Health:

Good-ish, will be better after a sleep

Outlook:

Rain tomorrow so will need to put my poncho on…all good though, I need a rinse.

KM Mark Finish:

Finish Location:

Portage Bay

Actual KM Today:

Weather:

Thick Sea Mist this morn, then Sunny

General:

All day walking the ridge line overlooking the incredible bays that all look so inviting. I could happily set up permanent camp in each of them. Was going to go to Black Rock Campsite but was intercepted by a group of enthusiastic cyclists that were really interested in the project and ‘insisted’ (with offers of chips and beer) I go back to Portage Bay with them. They were such a generous, fun and welcoming group. Also, wouldn’t allow me to pay for dinner or a drink all night. Again, really touched by the kiwi hospitality and willingness to help out when they hear the reasons behind the 3RY project. Thanks guys…I hope the remainder of your trip was as much fun as that night! Spent some time in these areas as a kid…the memories come flooding back.

Body/Health:

Great tonight, tomorrow may be a different story

Outlook:

Really enjoying the QCT

Finish Location:

Davies Bay Queen Charlotte Track

Actual KM Today:

22

Weather:

Overcast but fine

General:

Made the most of the scones & coffee before leaving havelock on the nearly-complete ‘Link Pathway’.

It’s a nice track that more or less runs parallel with the road between Anakiwa and Havelock (and soon, all the way to Picton)

Met two ladies who’d come away for a break to brainstorm business ideas! Great place for it. Felt tempted to join in.

Passed the outward bound camp in Anakiwa and saw them all being run through their paces. Looked like fun. Finally joined the Queen Charlotte Track and set up camp at Davies Bay. Nice spot looking out to the sea.

Body/Health:

Taking it easy on my legs at the moment.

Outlook:

Really looking forward to the Queen Charlotte Track.

Weather:

Sunny, then heavy rain over night

General:

A nice walk around the circle loop at Pelorus Bridge, then followed the Pelorus River past the historic gold mining town of Canvastown to Havelock. Canvastown earned it’s name in the gold mining days when so many gold prospectors arrived in such a short time that the majority of the shelters were canvas tents. Havelock…Greenshell Mussel Capital of the World.

Body/Health:

Very good.

Outlook:

Looking forward to Queen Charlotte Sounds.

Last day walking out of the Richmond Forest Reserve area. Has been a blast, but pumped to have it behind me. The final part of the day was road walking out to Pelorus Bridge. The owners (John & Paula) of Kahikatea Flat Campsite @ Pelorus Bridge found out about the 3 Reasons Why Project and were super happy to help and sorted me out big time. I highly recommend a stop here if passing through. They have wicked pies, ice creams, coffee, cheese scones, date scones, chocolate brownies and smoothies…All tried and tested personally! Thanks again John and Paula.
