Actual KM today:

30km

Weather:

Sunny with high winds

General:

Day started following the Orauea Stream through farm land to Mount Linton Station, where it then begins following the Wairaki Stream and 4wd tracks up and down the ridges and gullies. Most of the day continued like this, over farmland alongside some native bush in patches.

Spotted a few skinks along the way and again, Galaxids in the streams (remembered today I may have forgotten to mention the koura I saw along the Ports Water Race before and in Longwood Forest).

Ended up on the wrong side of the ravine so had to back track as the sides were vertical. Too steep to clamber down and the campsite was on the opposite side.

Arrived to camp as it was getting dark. Made an embarrassing attempt at getting the tent up in the wind, sorted it eventually. Definitely didn’t trust it (or more my tent pitching abilities), but it lasted the night and the high winds, so that’s a win.

Mosquitos are insane at this site. Proper trail bullies that harassed me ‘till they broke me. Couldn’t open the tent door, even for a moment, or they’d swarm.

The outside of my tent was black with them in the morn. Packed up inside the tent as if it was raining as they were so prolific.

Body/Health:

Not ideal at the mo, every step is painful now. Only able to walk near on crawling pace. The pain shoots through my legs and body. Hard to enjoy the day when the body is playing up. Think there’s a little more going on than just blisters as there’s some discolouration and swelling in lower legs too.

Outlook:

I am in a positive frame of mind and still loving being here. I’m sure I’ll sort the foot issues out, but the possibility them being an issue going forward does play on my mind throughout the day.

General:

Day of recovery for my feet and body. Was told not to try and tackle the Takatimus with the condition my feet are in.

Local rodent population had feasted on my rations overnight. The peanut butter was just too tempting for ‘em.

Spent the majority of the day catching up with 3RY website, Facebook and Instagram.

Body/Health:

I feel like a stuck record but… yup, my feet are no good. Blisters drowned in disinfectant.

Outlook:

Looking forward to getting into the Takatimus and hoping the feet play ball.

Weather:

Sunny & hot all day

General:

Trail was via two tracks. Island Bush Walk and Woodlaw Bush Walk and farm land.

Fantails accompanied me through both of these. Plenty of deer and wild pig sign around.

Met a character at Birchwood Station. He is a war vet that has filmed and produced a documentary, has his own port and beer labels, has recently completed a commissioned mural on the RSC in Gore, was involved in the release of a song dedicated to those that have served and is an MPI wild game meat supplier. His war stories were amazing and hard hitting. A real character I’m really glad I met.

Body/Health:

Feet are a problem. Bleeding all day.

Outlook:

Positive – You know you live in an amazing place when the scenery continues to impress you after 38 years.

Weather:

Rain, Sun, Rain. Warm

General:

Through Longwood Reserve on Longwood Range, via an abandoned quarry, onto Bald Hill and down to Merrivale Road.

The reserve is surreal and movie-set-like. Enormous, contorted, moss and lichen covered trees. Moss carpets the ground. So many shades of green and types of fungi.

Started the day face first in knee deep mud.

Overall the trail is lot more physically demanding than I ever expected.

Body/Health:

Feet are properly shredded. Blisters under, on and between toes.

Outlook:

Positive – fingers crossed I can sort my feet out.

General:

Holy shit balls… I almost didn’t make that.

The trail follows the Riverton Highway, onto Round Hill then through Longwood Forest, alongside Ports Water Race.

Historical Gold Workings are scattered in various places along the trail.

A memorial bench in honour of the Inaugural Trustee of Te Araroa Southland Trust is found here too.

The end of the day was waaaay harder than I expected. I suspect it’s the previous days catching up on me and today’s effort combined.

Steep muddy terrain made the going tough in the last 5km. I went off trail with a cunning plan to take a short cut, big mistake LOL. Dense bush with a heavy pack is a bad combo.

Fell over multiple times, with steep slopes and muddy conditions.

Made it to Martins Hut via Ports Water Race, onto Cascade Road then Turnbulls Track.

Martin’s Hut was Built in 1905 by Fred Mason to house a water race maintenance worker used for the gold mining operations.

Started in the top bunk, spotted a number of large spiders staring me out, went to the bottom bunk.

Body/Health:

Knackered & blisters.

Outlook:

Loving it, hopeful my body will gain some trail fitness quickly.

Overcast, intermittent rain, strong winds @ times.

General:

Some truly epic scenes today in Mores Reserve and Colac Bay. Can see Stewart Island and the other Foveaux Strait Islands from the look-out in Mores Reserve.

Day started from Riverton Anchor in the Historical Whaling Port. Then up through Mores Reserve, across private farm land via Tihaka Beach Track and around the coast to the quaint Colac Bay.

Encountered the biggest, most vibrantly colourful and fiercely territorial Tui I’ve ever come across today.

Found a fully functioning Cressi speargun washed up on the beach…Yoink!

Body/Health:

All good, a little sore but nothing too bad @ all.

Outlook:

Positive. Enjoyed the day and looking forward to some backcountry trail.

Weather:

Windy, cold, rain intermittently throughout the day

General:

Stoked my body allowed me to get out of bed, albeit very slowly.

Most of the day was spent walking the length of Oreti Beach on hard sands with stretches of loose sand and rounded pebbles.

Standard coastal wildlife spotted along the way. Shags, Blue Bottle jelly fish, Oyster Catchers and impressively large Horse Mussels (Do we eat these? If not, why not?)

I was offered my first lift today in the middle of a downpour and as hard as it was to say no, they understood when I explained my goal of completing the journey self propelled.

People were using the beach for collecting seafood, motor bike riding and horse riding.

A few estuary crossings along the way but nothing too deep.

Ended up walking through the waves as the tide came right up to base of the sand dunes.

Sand in shoes = shredded feet.

Body/Health:

Generally pretty good. A few moments of calves cramping and shoulders seizing up.

Outlook:

Daunted by the challenge ahead but positive.

Apologies they can’t be more frequent. The locations with mobile reception are few and far between!

Waxing lyrical is not my forte so I’ll keep these updates brief.

I’ll post additional snippets of the journey and frequently asked questions on Facebook and Instagram.

Actual KM today:

Weather:

Bitterly cold, heavy rain all day, strong winds

General:

I couldn’t have picked a worse day to start! Bitterly cold, raining all day, with gale force winds.

Day 1 – Step 1 started at Lands End Bluff and the obligatory photos under the street sign pointing to various locations around the world, including Cape Reinga, my ultimate goal.

The journey started around the Bluff Hill/Motupōhue Reserve, a rugged, southerly exposed coastline.

The flora and fauna within and around the reserve is impressive. I was greeted by Tuis, Bellbirds, Spoon Bills, Oyster Catchers, White Fronted Terns, Stewart Island Shags, Gannets and Fernbirds, amongst an abundance of other bird life. A small pod of Hectors dolphins joined me as I made my way around the headlands.

The trail lead me over the Millennium trail and back into Bluff to make my way up the Bluff Highway (SH1), all the way to the New River Estuary Cycle Path which then lead me to the Historic Wharf on Stead Street, my final destination for the day.

I said at the start of this update, I’d picked the worst day to start, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I expect half the fun/challenge of this trip will be dealing with what Mother Nature throws my way.

Special thanks to my send-off crew (Ma ‘n Pa) for dropping off a steaming hot, triple shot coffee while I was battling down State Highway 1! I really needed that.

Body/Health:

My legs were seizing up by the end of the day. Don’t think the cold helped, soaked through to the bone.

Outlook:

Shocked…Harder than I ever expected. But still super stoked to be here.

Welcome to ‘3 Reasons Why’

Challenge 2: 100 KM Walking in One Day – DONE

Challenge 3: + 1 push up everyday until I can’t do any more (increasing by one each day). The less outdoorsy type challenge seems appropriate given the C19-LD situation! – DONE (made it to 80)

3 Reasons Why – 3RY:

This page of the 3RY website will keep you updated with progress updates of the 3RY journey, from Bluff to Cape Reinga and everything in-between.

It’s worth mentioning, this page is in reverse order. So if you would like to start from the beginning of the journey, scroll to the bottom of the page and work your way up.

Going Bush!

Righto…I’m going bush

Thought I’d kick off 2019 with something a lil’ different.

Not ‘same same but different’ – just different.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to visit some next-level countries and experience some crazy-cool cultures in my travels. But something I’ve wanted to do, for as long as I can remember, is experience New Zealand.

I’ve decided to walk the length of the Long White Cloud…right up the guts. Bluff to Cape Reinga.

Backcountry, off-road and self-propelled.

The responses I’ve had so far to this cockamamie plan are:

– Fu*k you’re a weirdo bro.
– Holy shit man! I’m coming.
– You’ll miss the EMINEM gig.
– That…is…siiiiiiic!
– What if we die while you’re doing it?
– Mid-life crisis mate?
– Big balls big dawg.
– You better finish man.
– I admire that Mike.
– Ahhh you’ll miss Feastock?
– How can you walk the Cook Straight? Ya can’t, so you’re clearly not walking the length of NZ are ya?
– You’ll get tired legs.
– Can we come?!
– What about work?
– Forrest…Forrest Gump.
– Matt Daaaaamon!
– How come though?
– What will you eat, fern fronds?
– Take my children.
– You should do it on rollerblades.
– You should walk it backwards for a challenge.
– Good on ya bro, that’ll be an adventure.

So…

I was ‘forced’ to come up with some causes greater than my just wanting an adventure and a new challenge.

In the interest of keeping the balance of fun and productivity, I’ve created a wee side project called 3 Reasons Why (3RY).

Raising funds (and, in my opinion, just as importantly) awareness, for the three following causes:

1. Spinal Cord Injuries and Accessibility
2. Prostate Cancer
3. Mental Health (Depression and Anxiety)

These causes have directly and indirectly touched the lives of many of my friends and family.

More information and links to the charities ‘3RY’ will be supporting can be found on the ‘3RY’ website in the “Go On – Give Us a Hand” tab.

I will also follow this post up with some direct links, if anyone is keen to have a gander.

As you all well know, my social media game is Rubbish.

So I’ll do my best to keep the chat up throughout the journey via the three following channels:

1. www.3RYnz.com

2. Instagram

3. Facebook

I currently have NO idea what I’ll be writing about but there have so far been questions asked about trail gear, progress updates, preparation, training, the 3RY causes and the charities themselves.

One of the unexpected and welcome results of my chats with peeps thus far, has been hearing about their own personal experiences with the causes 3RY is supporting.

For those of you that have shared those stories…thank you.

Aaaanyways, long story short.

I may, over the next 4-5 months, bombard you with links, posts and general chat from the trip and the ‘3 Reasons Why’ project.

Please feel free to follow if you’re interested or unfollow if it’s not your cup of tea!

Happy New Years Fam 👊🏼.
